Transcript of Cross Afire #2: Black Men In Prison: How Many Is Too Many?
Pat Buchanan: Welcome again to Cross Afire, America's far-right debate show. From the right, I'm Pat Buchanan.
Jerry Falwell: And from the right of him, I'm Reverend Jerry Falwell. Tonight's guest... esteemed Senator Jesse Helms! Welcome!
Jesse Helms: Thankee!
Pat: Jesse, recent studies show that between 10 and 15 percent of all black men in twelve states are in prison--
Helms: And your question to me is: "How can we increase that number?"
Jerry: Boo-yah!
Pat: Actually, the question is: What percentage of black men in prison would be too high?
Jerry: Are you a communist?
Helms: Back before the War of Northern Aggression, nearly 100% of southern black males were essentially in prison. 10-15% is a hell of a lot less! What are people crying about?
Jerry: Well said! Besides, prisons are profitable! Incarceration is good business! It's the American way! I say: Time served in prison is the finest way a black man can contribute to capitalist America! It's downright patriotic!
Pat: I agree, but if the prison rate reaches 25%, I fear Black America will revolt! We must avoid that!
Helms: That's why we must expand the death penalty! Then we can control the number of black men in prison... AND MAKE ROOM FOR ALL THOSE ARAB AMERICANS!
Pat: God bless, Senator! Join us again for Cross Afire! We're allll rrrright!
Jerry: Stay white!
